Country in the City

Billy Goat photo

In a city full of skyscrapers, you may not expect to come across sheep and cows in Toronto. In actuality, The Big Smoke is home to many farms that are inhabitant by all the animals you would find on a country ranch, from horses to goats and chickens. These farms are great destinations to take kids to on a nice spring day or to just enjoy a visit with the animals. Their picturesque scenery also makes many of them popular locations for photographers. Best of all? They are all free to the public! Here are three must-visit Toronto-area farms:

High Park Zoo

Perhaps best known as the home of runaway capybaras Bonnie and Clyde, the High Park Zoo is owned by the City of Toronto and houses more than 45 animals, including bison, llamas and sheep. Its location in the heart of the city makes it easily accessible by public transit, and it is open to visitors year-round. The zookeepers here love to interact and will frequently give informal information sessions to spectators. Bonnie and Clyde recently gave birth to capybara triplets, so on your next trip to the zoo, don’t forget to check them out and enter the naming contest!

Riverdale Farm

Located in Toronto’s Cabbagetown neighborhood, Riverdale Farm was the site of the city’s first zoo. It is a photographer’s dream, filled with historic buildings, wooded areas, ponds and gardens. The farm describes itself as “a representation of a rural farm in Ontario,” and is home to a number of domestic farm animals. The farm recently announced the arrival of three newborn lambs, so be sure to pay them a visit! Like the High Park Zoo, Riverdale Farm is also open in all seasons.

Far Enough Farm

This farm may not actually be too far from the city, but it is slightly more difficult to get to than the others; you will need to take a boat. Far Enough Farm can be found on Toronto’s Centre Island, which you can get to via a short ferry ride. The farm and petting zoo is home to dozens of species of animals and birds, with new ones arriving on a regular basis. There are also farm-themed games for kids to play and opportunities to meet the farmers and ask them questions about the animals. Make a day trip out of your visit by exploring the island and taking a twirl on the rides at Centreville Amusement Park. Remember to pack a picnic lunch!
