Tips for Bringing your Car out of Storage

Tips for Bringing your Car out of Storage

The warm weather is finally upon us! With that, now is the perfect time to start getting your vehicle ready to emerge from its lair.  In order to make sure you’re taking proper care of your vehicle, make sure to read these do’s and don’ts for bringing your car out of storage:

Check the exterior

If your car spent the significant time under a cover, there’s a chance the paint may have been damaged from either moisture or the cover itself. Do a thorough inspection, and take it in if the exterior needs a little freshening up.

While you may be anxious to get your vehicle back on the road, it’s better to deal with any damage now, and not wait until the hot summer months to have it looked at.

Tires

One of the biggest things you’ll need to check is your vehicle’s tires.  If your car has been sitting on its tires for the entire winter, there may be cracks or bulges in one or more of the tires.  If you chose to remove your tires instead, you’ll still need to check to see if they’re properly inflated, and bring them to the correct PSI rating if they’re not.

Do not start driving before all your tires have been inspected and inflated to their proper levels. Failing to do so could lead to a potentially harmful situation.

Battery

Next is ensuring your battery works properly.  If it’s not already fully charged, make sure it is. You’ll have a hard time starting your vehicle if the battery is only partly charged, so make sure to connect it to a trickle charger if it still needs charging. Also, make sure to clean any corrosion off the terminals and cables.

If your battery is leaking or isn’t fully functioning, it’s time to get it replaced.

Change your engine oil

Even if you changed your engine shortly before storage, it’s in your best interest to have it replaced again at your earliest convenience.  While you’re at it, it’s not a bad idea to check the rest of your fluids to see if they’re at their proper levels.  If you notice any leaks, make sure to get them fixed before starting your vehicle.

Start your engine

If you put steel wool or something similar in your tailpipe to prevent rodents from getting in, don’t forget to remove it before starting the engine.

Once your vehicle is ready to go, start your engine and give your car a quick test spin. Don’t travel too far, just in case something goes wrong. Make note of any weird sounds or noises during the ride, and be sure to have them looked at by a mechanic as soon as possible.

Automatic Car Wash vs Hand Wash

Automatic Car Wash vs Hand Wash

With summer in full effect, there’s no better time to wash your vehicle.  Determining whether to go to an automatic wash or do it yourself can be a tricky decision, as there’s really no right or wrong answer.

Choosing the best method will depend largely on your personal preferences, so read ahead to find the optimal choice for you.

AUTOMATIC CAR WASH

The obvious advantage of going to an automatic car wash is the time and convenience factor. We all have busy lives, and may not have the opportunity to fit a long hand car wash into their schedule. Depending on how thorough you are, washing your vehicle by hand could take up to an hour to complete, while an automatic wash can be completed in just a few minutes.

Unless you know what you’re doing, you could easily scratch your vehicle if you do a poor job washing it yourself. If you have little confidence in your abilities, it’s likely in your best interest to leave it to the machines.

While automatic car washes are certainly more convenient, they may not be the best for your vehicle’s exterior. If the wash is done poorly, it could leave smear marks that could become almost impossible to remove down the road.

HAND WASH

While washing yourself will undoubtedly take more time to complete, a little elbow-grease could also be worth it in the long run.

As long as you know what you’re doing, hand washes typically do a much better job of cleaning the vehicle. If you’re willing to spend the proper time, you’ll likely be able to remove more dirt and grime compared to an automatic wash.

Washing a vehicle yourself will also give you the ability to wax and polish your vehicle, helping to remove any extra debris and give your car a brand-new looking finish.

Finally, most automatic car washes will use either air drying or blow drying. Both of these methods are more likely to leave water spotting that could remain on your vehicle for years. Using a micro fiber cloth during your hand wash can avoid these problems entirely.

CONCLUSION

If you value your time above all else, automatic car washes may be the way to go. Sure, they can be a little harsh on your car’s exterior, but the time you save could may be a balancing factor with the mild risk. Also, depending on who you are, your car’s ability to get you from point A to point B may be all you really look for in a vehicle.

If you truly care about properly maintaining your vehicle, you should find the time to regularly wash your car by hand. Doing your own wash will help to get at spots that an automatic wash couldn’t dream of getting, and will have your car looking newer than ever.

Checking in with the Hwy 11 Cruisers

Hwy 11 Cruisers

A car club’s Tuesday night “cruiser” is a place I did not expect to find myself on a regular summer evening, however, last week from about 7 to 9pm, that is exactly where I was.

Hwy 11 Cruisers

After meeting with Daniel Earle, car enthusiast and NewRoads employee at the Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership in Newmarket, I was intrigued by his inimitable excitement for cars. While chatting with Daniel and inspecting the car “mods” on his SRT4 Neon, I couldn’t help but notice the numerous times he mentioned the “Boosted Creations” – his like minded car enthusiast buddies. It became clear to me that Daniel was only one of many young people who passionately cared for and modified their car.

Hwy 11 Cruisers Newmarket

It didn’t take long for Daniel to invite me to join him and his fellow car enthusiasts to their weekly meeting called the Hwy 11 Cruiser. Located at 17850 Yonge Street right in front of the Harvey’s restaurant, this group of gathers together every Tuesday evening to display their cars and check out each other’s latest mods.

Hwy 11 Cruisers Classic Car Club

So on June 29th, I found myself standing right in front of the Newmarket Harvey’s in the midst of many car enthusiasts. Initially, I felt a little bit out of my element, but after being introduced to a few of the other Boosted Creations, I actually found myself starting to think of ways to enhance my own vehicle.

Hwy 11 Cruisers Classic Car Club

I decided to bring my dad to the event because I knew he’d be the perfect date for such an occasion. As I expected, he really enjoyed it and ended up requesting a photo with many of the cool cars that were there. He even saw one of his first/favorite past cars, a 69 Cutlass. All in all, we both enjoyed the event and were intrigued by this group of dedicated car buffs.

We came away from the event realizing that it wasn’t just the mutual admiration of cars that brings this group together, but also the way each of them work to make their cars unique. They share a common interest that supersedes competition and is replaced with collaboration and an appreciation of each other’s passion for cars.

Though it seems like TIFF just ended, there was another Film Festival that made headlines in the Automotive world recently. The 3rd annual Jalopnik Film Festival sponsored by Mazda kicked off September 25th, featuring films all about cars. This years winner was “Building Your Dream Ferrari is a Beautiful Thing” by Petrolicious.

Jalopnik Editor-in Chief said: “There’s a reason why this is the second year in a row a Petrolicious video was featured at the festival, and it’s that they’ve elevated the short car feature in such a way that they’ve set the standard for everyone else,” when talking about this years winning film. The film documents the process and story as Peter Giacobbu rebuilds an incredible 1959 Ferrari 250 TR.

As the title sponsor of this event, Mazda held a ride & drive event featuring the new MX-5 that was released earlier this summer. The point of the festival is to celebrate the significance of automotive topics on film. Along with their short film contest the festival also screened classic films like the original Mad Max, Ronin, and documentaries like Being Evel, Steve McQueen: The Man and Le Mans as well as Havana Motor Club.

We had the ultimate #SundayFunday last weekend when we spent the day in East Gwillimbury at the Highway 11 Cruisers Car Show!  We’re proud sponsors of this event and have been for years, and it’s definitely something that we look forward to each year. This year we brought a few of our newest and sportiest cars, but were happy to be surrounded by some of the greatest vintage cars and trucks in the region. The great thing about this event is that all of the proceeds go towards the Big Brothers, Big Sisters foundation as well as the SickKids Foundation. Sunday could not have been a better day for this event, the sun was shinning and there was not a cloud in sight!  We’re already dreaming of next years event!

Why Get Your Car Professionally Detailed?

Why Get Your Car Professionally Detailed?

Unless you’re looking to sell your vehicle, chances are high that you haven’t spent much time thinking about detailing your car. However, it can actually provide plenty of benefits other than the obvious. Read ahead to learn why you should strongly consider detailing, and how it is one of the most cost effective ways to be spending your money.

Overall Cleanliness

One of the biggest benefits to detailing is the improvement in your vehicle’s cleanliness. By getting rid of dirt, debris, and removing any odours, your car will feel brand new once you step inside.

Detailing may also bring health benefits, especially if you’re someone who gets serious allergies. Vehicles are often littered with bacteria, especially in the winter when they’re cold and wet. A professional detail removes dust and can assist in killing these germs.

Avoiding Rust

The best time to get your car detailed is during the winter. Road salts can wear away at the paint of your vehicle, causing rust and potentially ruining your vehicle’s exterior. A professional will be able to remove the salt deposits, and help to ensure nothing serious arises.  Say no to rust.

Have Your Car Looking New

Although you can wash, wax and buff your vehicle on your own, you’re also running the risk of making a mistake when you refuse to leave it to the experts.  Improper washing and waxing can leave water or smudge marks, especially if you don’t do a thorough job. Making a mistake buffing can damage the car’s exterior, so unless you’re confident in your abilities, you should take it in to the professionals.

Car detailing sponge

Resale Value

One of the main reasons people choose to detail their vehicle is because it increases their resale value. Since it isn’t very expensive, detailing is one of the most cost effective investments out there when you’re looking to sell.  Just like sprucing up a house before you list it – the same is true with your vehicle.  Love it, list it, detail it.

Safety

One of the biggest hidden benefits to detailing your car is your own well-being. It may seem surprising, but removing dirt and debris from your vehicle can have a profound effect on your safety.  For example, your tires can pick up plenty of chemicals, dust and debris over the course of your commute. Having clean tires can improve your handling, braking and can reduce corrosion.

How Often Should You Get it Detailed?

This really depends on the owner, but if you’re someone who prides themself in taking good care of your vehicle, you don’t need to do it as often.  If you don’t clean your vehicle regularly, you should aim to have it detailed every year. This will help keep your car in tip top shape.

Even if you take great care of your vehicle, you should still look to have it detailed every once in a while. A professional detail facility will be professionally trained, and will be able to clean it in places you wouldn’t think of looking.
