Ok so I know the lack of snow is making us all feel a bit weird. Do we even still live in Canada? At this point, I am not so sure. I totally understand if a few of you are struggling with getting into the holiday spirit, because I know I am. In an attempt to get in the mood I borrowed the CUTEST Kia Soul and 2 of my besties and headed to the outdoor rink here in Newmarket!

Obviously the skating rink is the highlight of this space, but honestly I also love seeing all of the trees lit up by Fairy Lake. When my friend and I first saw it we were both like “Whoa, Newmarket you really went all out this year”. After our first shocked feeling I could not help but smile about how beautiful it all looked. The lights, and the atmosphere… holiday vibes were creeping in! Another important part about the holidays is spending time with your friends and family. I was so happy to just be with my girl friends and goof around a bit. Even though we live pretty close – it’s really easy to get caught up in day-to-day life, so it was a bonus that my NewRoads travels lets me overlap with quality friend time too. (Thanks boss)

The magic about finally feeling the holiday spirit might have happened when some of the local Lululemon staff approached us handing out gift cards. It was such a small, but kind gesture. They didn’t want anything from us all they wanted to do was spread the spirit of giving! The rink behind Newmarket’s Main Street also had some massive frames to take photos with too. Over all it was so much fun, but the pictures don’t do it justice, shooting in the darkness is not my forte! Especially when it gets dark at 4:30 pm, and this is a place that you definitely need to see for yourself.

I think this night had to be one of the “colder” nights so far, and I finally broke out my parka. With a little chill in the air I really appreciated the heated steering wheel in the Soul. I also found the entertainment system really easy to navigate allowing me put on some fun tunes for the drive. Since there was just 3 of us the Soul was perfect for our outing, even had room to spare – perfect for our mini adventure.

We’re in the full swing of Fall Fashion weeks all over the world it’s not just the clothes that take the spotlight. Automotive brands like Kia and Cadillac also took on the runways this year at New York Fashion Week (NYFW).

 

As a growing brand Kia is always trying new things and taking chances, it’s probably one of the things that makes them such a fun brand. This year at New York Fashion week, Kia Motors was the title sponsor of Style360. Known for hosting celebrity fashion shows and presentations, Style360 was excited to have Kia on board this year. The runway was full of familiar faces as tennis pro Serena Williams, Adam Levine and Ashley Graham debuted their upcoming collections and collaborations. With this surprising presence at NYFW, Kia also broadcasted the shows via SnapChat – showing that they’ll continue to break out from the automotive crowd.

As we’ve seen through out the past year or so, Cadillac has evolved into a brand that has a strong presence in the fashion world. Thus, it should be no surprise to see them at NYFW. Along with their incredible stunt with Public School, Cadillac has also teamed up with Nick Wooster to launch a Capsule Collection of men’s wear. During a time in which Women’s wear is in the spotlight it’s nice to see someone focus on men’s wear. The Cadillac Capsule Collection is comprised of pieces of today’s most influential emerging men’s designers. “Cadillac asked me to curate a group of things that I think any guy should have,” said Wooster when talking about the collection. As always we have to keep our eyes out for what Cadillac will do next!

Korean automaker Kia has made steady improvements in quality over the years and is now among the industry’s quality leaders. In addition to a strong overall performance in the J.D. Power 2015 U.S. Initial Quality StudySM (IQS), Kia produces two award-recognized models that perform particularly well. This year, Kia receives two initial quality awards: the 2015 Soul in the Compact MPV segment, and the 2015 Sorento in the Midsize SUV segment.

Kia ranks second among 33 industry nameplates in initial quality. Additionally, Kia achieves the highest score among all Non-Luxury brands in the industry. Kia earns an overall score of 86 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) in the 2015 U.S. IQS, which is 26 PP100 better than industry average and a significant 20-point improvement from 106 PP100 in 2014.

 

Kia ranks second industry-wide in initial quality and achieves the highest score among all Non-Luxury brands.

 
The U.S. Initial Quality Study, now in its 29th year, examines problems experienced by vehicle owners during the first 90 days of ownership. Initial quality is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100), with a lower score reflecting higher quality. The study is also an indicator of long-term vehicle quality.

 

The 2015 U.S. IQS evaluates eight problem categories that comprise initial quality:

The Driving Experience
Features/Controls/Displays
Audio/Communication/Entertainment/Navigation
Seats
Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning
Interior
Engine/Transmission

 
The IQS measures both defects/malfunctions and design-related problems—features that may be operating as intended but are poorly located or difficult to use. As a brand, Kia has the fewest number of design-related problems among Non-Luxury brands and improves significantly year over year.

With a score of 77 PP100 (problems per 100 vehicles*)—an improvement of 20 PP100 from last year—the Kia Soul ranks highest among six competitors in the Compact MPV segment and is among the 10 highest-scoring models industry-wide. The Soul has also received an IQS segment award three times since 2012. Additionally, the Soul outperforms the Compact MPV average (89 PP100) by 12 PP100. Furthermore, the Soul has both the fewest number of design-related problems and defect/malfunction problems in the Compact MPV segment.

The Sorento, Kia’s 7-passenger midsize crossover SUV, has steadily improved its performance in the Initial Quality Study. With a score of 81 PP100 in the 2015 IQS—a significant 26 PP100 improvement from 2014 and 33 PP100 better than segment average—the Kia Sorento ranks highest in its segment and receives an award in the Midsize SUV segment for the first time.

Over the last week/weekend Kia Motors America was one of the main sponsor of VidCon! What is VidCon you ask? Well, it is a multi-genre online video conference of course! Meaning to say that it celebrates everything digital online! Kia was having a great time with some awesome giveaways, celebrity guests, games and some Q&As with some famous faces! They even brought the DJ Soul back! (what cant the Soul be transformed into?!)

 

One highlight was the Q&A session with Lindsey Stirling! Stirling is an American violinist, dancer, performance artist, singer and composer, made famous through her YouTube channel! Since 2007, Sterling as been presenting choreographed violin performances, both live and in music videos on her YouTube channel. With such a unique sound and personality it is no surprise to see her being celebrated at this level at VidCon!

 

We can see a trend here with YouTubers becoming the new norm to get the attention of the younger generation; the millennials. We saw it before from Chevrolet and again now with Kia. It is great to see brands reaching out and trying new things to authentically reach their customers in a unique way!

Ok so I am sensing a trend here, first we had Chevrolet Best Day Ever where Chevy flipped the switch on April Fools day, and now we have the Best Day of Your Life (#BDOYL) presented by Kia!  Kia’s #BDOYL celebration happened over the last weekend with pro Vine-ers, DJ Pauly-D, Soulsicles, Thrillist and of course a Kia Soul (or two). You might be asking your self, whats the occasion? Well, Kia Motors America through this party celebrating for the longest day of the year (aka the Summer Solstice – June. 20th 2015)! Guests were treated to a fun day of partying with delicious food, all courtesy of Kia Motors. Looks like goodwill is the new currency!

In case you didn’t know Kia Canada is the official automotive sponsor of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015. Right now the soccer women of the world are facing off in the ultimate battle.  Kia is supplying official vehicles from its wide-ranging model line-up to the events.

Not sure if everyone else gets to the same level emotional investment while watching advertisements, or maybe I’m just really good at being a consumer and getting advertised do but for some reason I get really pulled in by ads. Usually car ads don’t have the same effect, but let me tell you the times are changing, because this I felt some emotions and inspirations and good feelings from these brands latest commercials! So with out further adieu, check out my favourite car ads!

Subaru for a long time now has played on the love factor of family relationships and damn, it gets me right in the heartstrings! With a bit of humor and a lot of Aweeee, Subaru brings us these adverts that comment on their brand as a life long product and that is something to invest in!

Kia on the other hand is known for their Hamser Ads, which personally don’t really do anything for me, but in the past Super Bowl they upped the anti and stared James bond him self, securing this advert on my list.

Like Kia, Cadillac is changing the game as well, now I am not particularly emotionally attached (who am I kidding) to these ads but I really am drawn to their structure and production. It is so ambiguous and aloof that you aren’t really sure what is going on until the end, they really sealed the deal with this campaign.

Mazda usually sticks to their cookie cutter ads about the cars but this latest advert looks like they took a page from Subaru’s playbook and it worked! This one takes you through the ups and downs of life in just 1 minute, and leaves you feeling good at the end of it all. Bravo!

Poker Run for MADD

 

The York Simcoe Riders, a Newmarket based motorcycle club held its 17th annual fundraiser, a Poker Run for MADD. The event welcomed all vehicles, including cars as participants cruised their way around Newmarket, East Gwillimbury, Georgina and ended with a BBQ and music. Even though the sunshine decided to stay behind the rain clouds, the spirit of all participants was terrific. All proceeds went to the York Region Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
