Impressive new Impreza for 2012
The 2012 Subaru Impreza is the fourth generation of the all-wheel drive compact car, and will again be available in four-door sedan and hatchback (Sport) models.
It’s roomier, lighter, quicker and more fuel efficient than the model it replaces, yet retains the same basic exterior dimensions (with a slight one-inch increase in wheelbase translating into a two-inch gain in rear seat legroom). The look is bolder and more dynamic, with the windshield base moved nearly eight inches forward. That creates larger door openings front and rear for better entry and exit.
Inside, there are new amenities, technology and a higher grade of materials to go along with the increased room (achieved by redesigning the interior door panels for better hip and shoulder room). Higher seating positions translate into better visibility all around. Trunk and cargo room have also increased, with the hatchback model providing a completely flat load floor through the use of standard 60/40 split folding seatbacks. Trunk space in the sedan is up by 20 litres on the sedan and nearly 100 on the hatchback.
Soft touch materials abound on the dash, doors and center armrests, and there are numerous storage cubbies to hold cups, bottles and an assortment of take-along items.
Power comes from an all-new DOHC 2.0-litre horizontally opposed (Boxer) four-cylinder engine (replacing the venerable 2.5 SOHC unit), delivering 148 horsepower to all four wheels by either a five-speed manual transmission or the Lineartronic continuously variable (CVT) unit. The CVT features a manual mode with pre-set ratios controlled by steering wheel paddles. That would be for the “regular” trim levels (expected to again be base, Touring and Limited), with expected WRX and STI high-performance models coming down the pipes at a later time.
The new engine is packaged smaller to allow increases to the cabin, but it’s actually slightly heavier due to adding features like the dual overhead camshafts and a new fuel injection system. Combined with weight lightening features for the rest of the car, it means buyers won’t see too much of difference in performance figures, though.
Strengthened suspension components enhance ride, straight-line stability, agility and vehicle response, further aided by a new electric power steering system. Lower rolling resistance tires help boost economy. All models have standard vehicle dynamics control, anti lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist, and a new driver knee airbag (in addition to the usual array). New front airbag designs and deployment sequences take into account occupants who may not be positioned optimally in crash situations.
All Imprezas feature power windows, locks and mirrors, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, remote keyless entry and variable wipers.
