2020 Coldest Night of the Year
Mission Accomplished! 2020 Coldest Night of the Year! #cnoy20
From all of us at the NewRoads Automotive Group we would like to thank everyone who came out or supported the 2020 Coldest Night of the Year on Saturday, February 22nd. The Coldest Night of the Year is a moment when tens of thousands of Canadians step outside the warmth and comfort of home and shine a light of welcome and inclusion, while raising funds and public awareness for hungry, homeless, and hurting people in our community.
Thousands across Canada hiked together; among them were clients, firefighters, police, teachers, schools, community groups, community leaders, sports teams, youth groups, volunteers, family’s, friends and more. From the volunteers in the registration area, the food service helpers, students, and sponsors – it truly was a team effort to make the Coldest Night such a success.
The weather was not too cold and allowed for what was the perfect setting for team “Walk this Way” to enjoy a walk along Leslie Street in East Gwillimbury. People`s spirits were high as they walked with pride and shared their stories of courage and support for those most vulnerable here in our community. The walk was a beautiful symbol of the community’s love for those who suffer, and there was a feeling of honour that marched alongside all of the participants. It was a fantastic experience and we are proud to have been able to share and support such a compassionate group of people.
Homelessness should be process not a destination. Often once we see it we are too late. Homelessness is often in plain sight and we are unaware of the situation that is about to unfold. Many factors that lead to homelessness are sudden job loss, financial crisis, mental health issues and substance abuse. Prevention and diversion is often the key.
Blue Door Shelter located in East Gwillimbury & Newmarket is the largest emergency housing provider in York Region; Blue Door provides safe and supportive emergency housing and support services for people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
To date the 2020 Coldest Night of the Year in East Gwillimbury archived 122% of their goal. While the totals are still coming in, since 2011, the Coldest Night of the Year has raised over $27,000,000 in support of 133 communities and charity partners serving the homeless, hungry, and hurting across Canada.
Save the date for #cnoy21, we walk again on Saturday, February 20th 2021
