Tips For Buying a Used Car

Some people thrive on the thrill of the hunt and the art of negotiation… the rest of us dread the very thought! Here are 6 tips to consider when you’re ready to purchase your next used car.

1. What exactly do you need? Hauling the kids and family around, fuel efficiency, fancy features, cargo space for hockey bags?

2. How much to spend? Set a budget cash amount to spend and desired monthly payment amount. Know these figures before you set out on your journey!

3. Narrow the field. Make a short list of vehicles that meet your needs. Google is your friend, lean on your smarty-pants friend for the information you need.

4. Drive it! This should go without saying, but you’d be surprised by what I’ve seen over the years. Give it a good run, not just around the block. Bring a tape measure if size or interior size is important, take notes, bring the family including pets if they are all going to spend time in the vehicle. Remember, no 2 cars drive the same.

5. Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) programs vs Non-Certified programs. Non-Certified requires only a standard safety inspection. Manufacturers set far higher standards for re-conditioning with a CPO used vehicle. Over the long term a certified pre-owned vehicle will offer lower maintenance cost and a all around better experience. Most CPO programs included exchange privileges and extra warranty coverages.

6. Ask for a CarProof® – This is one of the most extensive background checks you can get on a used vehicle. Important information included in a CarProof®: any outstanding liens, previous accidents, insurance repairs, theft claims and registration history including out of country information. This is information you need to make an informed decision. Make sure your dealership provides this service on their vehicles.

There you have it, my 2 cents that could save you oodles down the road. Happy hunting!
