Annoying driving habits to avoid

For many Ontarians, commuting to and from work can be the most frustrating part of their day. Part of the reason for this is that many drivers aren’t always considerate and their lack of courteousness can easily irritate others.
Here are six annoying driving habits and why they’re so dangerous:

Stopping too far into an intersection

If you work downtown, you’ve likely noticed that many drivers appear to completely ignore the solid white line when they come to a stop at an intersection.
Not only does this make it dangerous for pedestrians crossing, but it also makes it more difficult for drivers attempting to make a right-hand turn because of the car blocking their view.

Tailgating

There are few things more frustrating than having someone tailgate you. Sure, it may be frustrating if the car in front of you is driving slowly, but that doesn’t give you the right to follow behind at such a close distance. At the end of the day, it’s dangerous for both parties and should be avoided.
Instead, remember the two-second rule and pass when you’re legally able to do so.

Failing to signal

Refusing to signal whenever you turn is one of the most selfish driving habits around. Surrounding drivers need to be able to anticipate what you’re doing in order to reduce the risk of an accident.
However, having your signal on for too long can be just as annoying. If you signal way too far in advance, drivers won’t know when you’re actually turning, making the signal essentially useless.
When you do signal, make sure to warn others before you move. Turning on your signal after you’ve already began changing lanes isn’t all the helpful.

Hogging the left lane

Driving in the left lane is the right place to be if you’re looking to pass a slower-moving vehicle, but it’s not a place you should be staying for an extended period of time.
Spending too long in the left lane forces everyone behind you to go your speed limit. If they still want to pass you, they’ll be forced to pass you on the right-hand side, creating a dangerous situation for both drivers.

Failing to check your blind spot

Changing lanes without checking your blind spot is not only annoying and frustrating for other drivers, but it can also be extremely dangerous.
Remember to always check the appropriate mirror when changing lanes. You could end up avoiding a serious collision.

Speeding when you pass

Few things are more dangerous than drivers who begin to speed up as soon as you’re about to pass them.
While it may hurt the ego a bit to see a bunch of vehicles pass you, that does not give you the right to increase the risk of an accident just because you’re mad at someone who wants to drive faster than you.
