Curb Weight vs. Gross Vehicle Weight

Curb Weight vs. Gross Vehicle Weight

What is the difference between Curb Weight vs. Gross Weight?

Although it may seem strange, your vehicle actually has two different weights; curb weight and gross vehicle weight. Many people do not realize this, but it’s an important thing to know. For example, you could determine what weight class your vehicle is in or whether you are able to cross over bridges.

What is curb weight?

The “curb weight” of your car is the weight of the vehicle without any passenger or items in it except for the standard equipment that comes with it. This is the weight of your vehicle when it’s not being used and resting on a flat surface. This is what the manufacturer assigns to the vehicle and is normally the “standard weight.”

What is gross curb weight?

“Gross vehicle weight” is the weight with everything in it such as passengers, luggage and other cargo. This is very important for truck drivers as they carry a considerable amount of cargo so it can alter the weight of their vehicle dramatically.
If you’re still curious about the two different weights of your vehicle, consider talking to a dealer or mechanic as they can tell you more about what these two figures are and why they are so important to know.
