Planning for Prom

Prom Tips

Are you a soon-to-be high school graduate? If so, the night you’ve been waiting for since the first day of grade nine is nearly here: prom. This coming-of-age tradition is supposed to be an opportunity to dress up and celebrate with classmates, however for some students it can be more stressful than fun. From dresses to limos and photos, there is a lot to worry about leading up to the big night. However, with careful planning and preparation, you can make sure it goes off without a hitch:

Photography

Although photo-sharing apps such as Instagram and Facebook make it easy to capture and edit your own photos, you may want to enlist the help of a professional (or at the least, a semi-professional) to take pictures of you and your date and/or friends at your pre-prom gathering. If your crew doesn’t have room in the budget to hire a professional photographer, consider asking a photography student – they are always looking to add to their portfolios and will provide the service at a much lower cost.

Now, where to have your photos taken is the real question. Winding staircases and pool-side decks are often the go-to choice, but for something more scenic, head over to Fairy Lake in Newmarket or Mill Pond in Richmond Hill. Remember to smile!

Limo

If you are going to prom with a large group, chances are you’ve already booked a limo to take you to the venue and back. For the ride to go smoothly, make sure all the money has been collected ahead of time and check with your limo company to see what their preferred method of payment is. You’ll also want to give them a call a few days before prom to confirm the pickup location and time, as well as the limo size. Let all limo-riders know what time departure is set for so you don’t get stuck waiting on a latecomer, or even worse, leaving someone behind!

Hair & Makeup

Ladies, this may just be the most stressful part of your whole prom experience. However, there is no need to panic. If you are doing your own hair and makeup, practice doing different styles in the weeks leading up to prom, so you know exactly what to do when the time comes. Watching YouTube tutorials can also provide you with useful tips and inspiration!

If you are getting your hair and makeup professionally done, find some pictures online of styles you like and take them with to your appointment so your hairdresser and makeup artist have an idea of what look you are hoping to achieve. Taking a picture of your dress with you is also a good idea!

Outfit

You’ve had your suit or dress picked out for months, but remember to try it on a few weeks before prom night to make sure it still fits – this leaves plenty of time for alterations to be made if necessary.

Girls, your sky-high stilettos may look fabulous for photos, but your feet certainly won’t feel fabulous if you try to dance in them. Don’t forget to squeeze some fold-up flats or socks into your clutch – your feet will thank you when you hit the dance floor.

Guys, if you struggle with perfectly knotting your tie, practice, practice, practice! Don’t worry, there are tutorials for you too…

And don’t forget – comfort is key!
