Road Trip!

Road Trips

We’re just entering Road Trip Season! Does your family subscribe to the “traditional” Road Trip philosophy or are you a “techie” Road Trip family?

When I was a kid, we’d load up the family car with food, drinks, books, the dog and my Walkman (look it up kids) and off we would go! I was always excited about what I might see on our trip. We went to places like Thunder Bay, Mount Tremblant, Bar Harbour, Muskoka, Lake Placid and The Rocky Mountains. We’d play games like I-Spy, Who am I and Name That Tune. Fun Fun Fun!!

What’s a road trip like now with our vehicles packed with things like 40 Gig Hard Drives, DVD Entertainment Systems, USB Ports, Built in Game Consoles, Satellite Radios I-Pod Interface Capability and pause/record Radios? Do we still talk? Do we still play silly games with each other? I guess we still make mixed tapes but now they are thousands of songs on a jump drive plugged neatly into the center console.

With all the technology available at our finger tips, it would be easy to pick our individual entertainment sources and zone out until we reach our destination. Does that mean dad has to play I-Spy all by himself?  At least he’ll never lose!

My suggestion for your trips this summer… make an effort to “disconnect” from technology and make it about family and interaction. That’s where the memories come from.  It’ll make for a better trip for sure.

Happy Motoring!
