Previewing the new 2019 Corvette ZR1

The ZR1 is back, and it’s better than ever. Chevrolet dropped a bomb over the past weekend when it introduced the new 2019 Corvette ZR1, showcasing arguably its most impressive model to date.

Read ahead to find out what’s changed in this year’s version, and why car enthusiasts around the world are suddenly drooling over Chevrolet’s new supercar.

Speed demons will be thrilled to hear that the ZR1 is being marketed as the fastest and most powerful Corvette yet.  Equipped with 755 horsepower and 715 pound-feet of torque, the ZR1 is said to top out at greater than 210 miles per hour.

ZR1’s LT5 6.2L V-8 engine delivers the highest output of any vehicle in Chevrolet’s 106-year history, thanks in large part to General Motors’ first-ever dual-injection-system.

If you’re someone who kept on top of the various teases that were released over the past several months, you probably already had a solid idea of what the ZR1 looked like prior to Sunday’s announcement.

However, for those who have been kept in the dark, it should be noted that the 2019 model is as sleek as they come. The Sebring Orange Design Package offers a fresh look for the ‘Vette, with orange brake calipers, seatbelts, and interior stitching.

Even better, the interior is more comfortable relative to older models, with cushier seating and a more ergonomic feel overall.

Both a seven-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmission will be available in the 2019 model – marking the first time Chevrolet has offered an automatic transmission in the ZR1.

For those who take great pride in their speaker quality, Chevrolet is offering a Bose premium audio system. This year’s Corvette also comes equipped with Chevrolet’s Performance Data Recorder – allowing drivers to analyze their every move.

Heating and venting leather-trimmed seats are also available.

Solving old problems

After experiencing several issues with overheating with the Z06, GM went back to the lab and fixed arguably its biggest concern with the Corvette.  With 13 total heat exchangers and four new outboard radiators, the ZR1 is equipped with a much more efficient cooling system, offering 52 percent more displacement than the Z06’s LT4 supercharger.

What makes it so good?

If style, speed, and performance are the three attributes you cherish most in a new vehicle, then the 2019 Corvette ZR1 is the perfect car for you.  Simply put, this is the car supercar enthusiasts.

Release date

For those itching to get a closer look at the new ZR1, you’ll have to wait a few months, as the 2019 model won’t be released until next spring. A price has yet to be announced, stay tuned.

Last Minute Holiday Season!

2017 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback in winter

The holiday season is in full swing and it’s time for those last minute things. You know, that one person that you still can’t seem to figure out what to get or that other person that you forgot about until now (it happens to the best of us). I was in a very similar boat over the past weekend. So I set out on a mission, because holiday shopping is a battle and I was going to come out on top. I made a list and checked it twice, and pushed start in the new 2016 Chevrolet Cruze Hatch!

Christmas List

I’m going to tell you now that making a list was the best thing I did that day, because when you’re on a holiday shopping mission the last thing that you want to do is get distracted. First off I headed to the Real Canadian Superstore (which happens to be next door to our GM dealership)!  Even though the Superstore is usually the place to stock up on everything food I think that I hit the jackpot on holiday wrapping paper and cards – it’s the small things people!

Christmas List

After the Superstore I headed over to the dreaded mall.  I know, going to the mall the weekend before Christmas, call me crazy. But I love the mall so the crowds weren’t really a big deal. Upper Canada Mall is loaded up with the best of the best making it easy to find something for everyone your list. Now, this part is very important; pick up a little something for your self because you were brave enough to brave the mall, take it from me it will raise your spirits.

I think that it is important not to get lost in all the hustle and bustle of the holidays and spend some time appreciating the actual season. In Canada we’re very lucky that we have four seasons. So, even though the sun sets earlier and the temperature drops it’s still nice to spend time outside. In Newmarket we have so many options to enjoy the winter, skating on Main Street, tobogganing or just taking a walk with friends and family!

Here’s the deal, I think that the Chevy Cruze might be perfect & I think I might have an obsession with the back-up camera. Not only was it extremely helpful in the crowded parking lots but, reversing in general was a breeze – even in the snow. I’m also a personal fan of the keyless entry – it makes taking cover from the snow so much faster and simpler! The hatch back was also IDEAL for loading in all my gifts with tons of room. This small but mighty car will make dealing with the holiday season so much easier!

On my way to work at NewRoads Mazda, I couldn’t help but notice large cranes in front of the NewRoads GM store that I pass by on my everyday route. So I decided to stop by and check it out!

After inspecting a little closer, I could see they were installing signs above the store entrance. The building, which had already undergone changes, was now getting sleek new letters installed.

The following day, on my way by, I once again couldn’t help but stare at the NewRoads GM store. However, today it wasn’t the big cranes that drew my intention, it was the fresh and new CADILLAC BUICK GMC and CHEVROLET signage.

The beautiful signs leap off the fresh new facade  each automotive brand. Be sure to check it out at 18100 Yonge Street, Newmarket Ontario – you can’t miss it!

CIAS 2016 Recap - Subaru

The 2016 Canadian Auto Show is on this week (12th – 21nd) and we had a sneak peak the day before it opened to the public for some exciting reveals! Check out below to see what the NewRoads brand had in store!

First things first, congrats to the CX3 for being named AJAC Utility Car of the year! WAY TO GO MAZDA! Anyway, the display featured the MX5 Global Cup car as well as the new CX9 that was unveiled a few months ago. It was exciting to see the new redesigned SUV, and we can’t wait to see it in our show room! The MX5 Global Cup car was also great to see, loving all of the variations of the MX5 that are popping up. Too bad we couldn’t have had a visit form the RX vision!

Subaru had a lot going on! From the new Hyper Blue colour making an appearance to the new XV Crosstrek Hybrid and the new Impreza concept there was lots to see. Loving the new styling in this Impreza concept, it’s a bit of a difference to their traditional design, and it’s working. Also on display was one of Subaru’s rally cars, it was awesome to see a well used Subie. The vehicle that I was really excited to see that I didn’t expect was the XV Crosstrek HYBRID. That’s right a hybrid Subie. Can’t wait to take this bad bot out for a spin.

From the runways of New York City and Dubai the Cadillac XT5 made an appearance at this year’s CIAS. The new Cadillac SUV is a nice addition to the line up. Cadillac also revealed the AT6, making it obvious that they are style driven. Chevrolet took some queues from their consumers and announced the new Cruze hatchback and the BoltEV. Buick featured the new Envision (coming to showrooms soon) and the stylish Avenur concept showing that Buick has still got it. The GMC display is always fun to see with their suspended truck allowing you to walk under the vehicle and see all the moving parts.

2016 Toronto Auto Show Kia

2016 CIAS Kia

Personally, I was really excited to visit the Kia set up and see the much-anticipated 2017 Kia Sportage. It was everything I could imagine and more! Kia also revealed a new concept car that will be hitting the showrooms early 2017 named NIRO. The Niro model is a HUV (Hybrid Utility Vehicle) leading the new direction for Kia’s future. These two models showcase the initial future of Kia design and we’re into it! Another pleasant surprise at the Kia display was the #KiaAllStarMVP Turbo Optima – just in time for the NBA all-star weekend in Toronto!

Over all the future looks very exciting for our NewRoads brands and the Canadian automotive market in general!

Chevrolet World Record

Chevrolet World Record at Pan Am Games

Over course of the Pan Am Games in Toronto Chevrolet set out on a mission to break a world record. They wanted to see if they could have the most people generating electricity in 1 week, and they did it! It took 4,739 riders & 13,049 watts to complete the world record. Its amazing how one brand can bring people together in a fun interactive way to achieve one goal. To generate the energy Chevrolet set up a mini racetrack with cars that were powered by the human motion produced by stationary bikes and hand cranks. Chevrolet invited people out to help achieve this world record but also to come and have fun too! They encouraged attendees to challenge their friends all in the name of #PowerofPlay.

Chevrolet World Record Jump at Pan Am Games

This is not the first time Chevrolet has attempted a world record. In 2014 Rob Dyrdek teamed up with the Chevrolet sonic to preform the farthest reverse ramp jump by a car, which aired on the Fantasy Factory series finale. The reality TV star, professional skateboarder, and full-time thrill seeker set the record in a specially equipped 2014 Sonic driving backwards at 50mph up a launch ramp. He sailed over 80 feet to the safety catch ramp on the other side with Six Flags Magic Mountain in the background. What record do you think they will try and set next?

Lingenfelter and Callaway boost Corvette Z06 over 700 hp

Lingenfelter and Callaway Corvette Z06

Callaway Cars releases their most powerful Corvette
– 757 bhp / 777 lb-ft
– Z06-based Corvette upgrade boasts 32% larger supercharger, triple intercoolers, and consistent power – lap after lap

The Numbers – Callaway Cars today announced power numbers and performance for the flagship model in their performance car lineup. Equipped with Callaway’s GenThree Supercharger, the Corvette Z06 now produces 757 bhp @ 6,200 rpm and 777 lb-ft @ 4,500 rpm (SAE). A launch to 60 mph is now achieved in 2.8 seconds, and a quarter-mile in 10.5 seconds at 131 mph.

Why Go Big, When You Can Go Bigger? – Size Matters. To reach that power (which is up from 650 bhp / 650 lb-ft) the supercharger itself needed to be bigger since the output of a positive displacement supercharger is proportionate to its size. The Callaway GenThree supercharger is 32% larger in displacement (2300cc vs 1740cc).

Cooling – Callaway engineers recognize that a key contributor to maximizing power is reduction of inlet air temperature associated with forced induction. Callaway’s unique triple-element intercooler configuration provides significantly lower and well-managed inlet charge air temperatures than single or smaller dual-element designs. The supercharger housing extends through the hood, thereby exposing it to outside ambient airflow and adding an element of convective cooling. The supercharger is visible without opening the hood, and heat is inherently extracted from the engine compartment.

Bold Packaging – The supercharger assembly is no longer cramped below the hood line. The completely redesigned manifold helps maintain consistent charge air temperatures with exceptionally low restriction and even airflow distribution to all cylinders, which results in a broad torque band producing over 500 lb-ft from 2,000 to 6,400 rpm. This translates to more consistent power delivery in severe-duty driving environments, a compromise typically observed with “underhood” approaches. A 10-rib drive pulley system was also integrated to prevent belt-slippage.

Patents – The technical features of the Callaway GenThree supercharger are significant enough that utility and design aspects of the system have been awarded patent pending status through the US Patent and Trademark Office.

BRIGHTON, Mich. – Corvette owners who crave more performance and power from their C7 Z06 LT-4 engine, and an even greater adrenaline rush when behind the wheel, can satisfy their need for increased power with a new Stage 1 engine package from Lingenfelter Performance Engineering.

Lingenfelter’s C7 Z06 engine package ups the LT-4’s horsepower and torque without sacrificing drivability, while providing improvements in both throttle response and acceleration. Created with Lingenfelter’s signature attention to precise detail and quality, the 6.2L engine package increases the amount of boost the LT-4’s 1.7L supercharger makes, raising horsepower from 650 stock to 720 horsepower, with an increase of peak torque to 730 lbs. ft.

The kit includes: Lingenfelter LT1/LT4 dry sump damper, Lingenfelter 9.2-inch 15 percent overdrive supercharger drive pulley, supercharger drive belt, 100mm idler pulley kit, high flow air filter, 170-degree performance thermostat, GM crankshaft bolt, handheld programmer with Lingenfelter-designed tune for the LT-4 power package, professional installation by Lingenfelter-trained technicians as well as chassis dyno testing before/after installation with dyno graphs and video documenting the performance gains on USB drive. Special Lingenfelter branding, comprised of chrome fender badges, interior badge and personalized stainless engine badge, is added, along with Lingenfelter’s official certificate of authenticity. The package is backed by a one year/12,000 mile warranty on the added components.

The Lingenfelter Stage 1 LT-4 kit boosts horsepower and torque across the entire power band, which translates into a noticeable difference in acceleration. Throttle response is also greatly improved, with the LT-4 now responding instantly to pedal input. The result is a Z06 Corvette that feels more like a race car on a road course, yet with the manners and temperament of a car that can easily be driven comfortably daily on the street.

GM pedestrian avoidance technology

PRESS RELEASE:  GM Paving Way to Smarter and Safer Driving at All-New Active Safety Test Area

22 crash-avoidance technologies offered on 2016 Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac models

MILFORD, Mich. 2015-07-24 – Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac will offer 22 different active safety technologies across their 2016 model year U.S. lineups, ranging from driver alerts to those that automatically intervene and assist the driver in critical situations.

Safety engineers will develop and test these and other safety technologies for products around the world at GM’s new, 52-acre Active Safety Test Area at its Milford Proving Ground near Detroit. The $14 million facility officially opened Friday.

“Our comprehensive safety strategy of helping customers before, during and after a crash continues,” said Jeff Boyer, vice president of GM Global Vehicle Safety. “GM historically has been a leader in the development and testing of safety technologies, and applying our deep knowledge and expertise to prevent crashes from happening in the first place.”

Examples of available crash-avoidance technologies for 2016 GM models include:
– City Speed Front Automatic Braking: If the vehicle is traveling at a low speed and the system detects that a front-end collision situation is imminent while following a detected vehicle and the driver has not already applied the brakes, the system automatically applies brakes to help reduce the collision’s severity. The system may even help avoid the collision at very low speeds.
– Front Pedestrian Braking: If the system detects that a pedestrian is directly ahead and a collision is imminent, and the driver has not already applied the brakes, the system alerts the driver and, if necessary, automatically applies the brakes to help reduce the collision’s severity or avoid the collision.
– Rear Camera Mirror: Compared to a traditional inside rearview mirror, this rear view mirror display provides a wider, less obstructed field of view to assist when driving, changing lanes, and checking for vehicles and traffic conditions.
– Night Vision: Provides the driver an infrared night vision image of the area lit beyond the headlamps that highlights and provides alerts to detected pedestrians or large animals.
– Curb View Camera: When in Forward gear during low-speed maneuvering (e.g., parking), this system provides the driver a view of the scene immediately ahead of the vehicle on the vehicle’s center stack display to help the driver avoid low-speed collisions into nearby objects, such as curbs, poles, and parked vehicles.
– “The technologies we are developing and testing at this facility are available to our customers across our GM brands,” said Cynthia Bay, director of Active Safety Electronics and Controls. “Front Pedestrian Braking will be offered on the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu, and the lowest-priced Chevrolet we offer in the U.S. – the new 2016 Spark – has available Lane Departure Warning and Forward Collision Alert.”

The new Active Safety Test Area concentrates the company’s active safety testing into one, state-of-the-art site. It features:
– A 16-acre dynamics pad for testing a variety of robot-controlled and automated vehicles.
Highway simulation with six lanes, on/off ramps, controlled lighting and road signs that represent specifications around the world.
– A parking test area with different curb types and landscaping detection.
– Pedestrian test area with a 90-degree traffic intersection and specially designed rig for accurate dummy movement.
– Simulated tunnel with walls and posts.
– A building for observation, indoor testing, hoists for test preparation and a robotic control station.

Bay said the facility is ideal for testing vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) technologies, which will be standard on the 2017 Cadillac CTS.

“In addition to helping customers all over the world avoid crashes, many of the technologies we develop and test here are integral to our ongoing V2V communications work and even the development of future autonomous vehicles,” she said.

The V2V dedicated short-range radio communication enables vehicles to “talk” to each other and exchange basic safety data such as speed, location and braking status. It complements existing safety components like radar, camera and ultrasonic sensors; some of the components rigorously tested at the new Active Safety Test Area facility, in a fast and efficient way.

The facility is also used to assess performance in regulatory and insurance industry consumer metric tests, such as those conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Euro New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and others.

“General Motors is committed to setting a new standard for global product safety, and developing vehicles that continue to provide leading safety technologies which can help drivers avoid crashes,” said Boyer. “This facility will accelerate GM’s development and testing of innovative safety technologies.”
