Understanding Run-Flat Tires

What are Run-Flat Tires

 Run-Flat Tires

It is not uncommon for racecar technology to be featured in everyday cars years later. Now available in many luxury vehicles such as the 2013 Corvette ZR1 are run-flat tires, which debuted back in the 1930’s. Run-flat tires are able to hold out for approximately 80 kilometres after being punctured, eliminating the need for a spare tire in your vehicle.
Run-flat tires are able to work because they have a very stiff sidewall that allows the tire to hold its shape. Since you don’t need to carry a spare tire, you’ll be able to save money on fuel because you’ll be carrying a lighter load.
If you have run-flat tires you should also have a tire pressure monitoring system. If you have a slow leak in a run-flat tire, you won’t be able to notice it by eyeballing it. Although this may make tire maintenance more expensive, safety should be your number one concern and that’s more than worth the extra cost.
If you’re someone who isn’t comfortable replacing a punctured tire with a spare than you should strongly consider switching to run-flat tires so you can let the mechanic fix your problems.
