The Coldest Night of the Year
“The Coldest Night of the Year is a moment when tens of thousands of Canadians step outside the warmth and comfort of home and shine a light of welcome and inclusion.” Said Tracy Porter board chair from Blue Door Shelter.
Newmarket Toyota’s Mike Buckberrough has made a commitment as part of our 2020 NewRoads community sponsorship and participation to shine a light homelessness in our community. As the saying goes it’s a small world Newmarket Toyota’s Chris Oducayen has a special connection to Blue Doors and is championing the cause on our behalf. Both Mike Chris and many of our crew have been actively supporting the shelter and given their own personal time to this cause and we commend their efforts.
Homelessness should be process not a destination. Often once we see it we are too late. Homelessness is often in plain sight and we are unaware of the situation that is about to unfold. Many factors that lead to homelessness are sudden job loss, financial crisis, mental health issues and substance abuse. Prevention and diversion is often the key.
NewRoads in no stranger to supporting homelessness, and was a part of bringing to York Region the first homeless shelter for single women known today as Belinda’s Place. Belinda’s Place, opened in 2015 and is now run by another one of our community partners the Salvation Army, since it opened is at 98% capacity every night.
