How long will my water pump last? | Car Maintenance Tips

How long does a car water pump last

Your water pump is one of most important parts of your vehicle but it is a component that is often overlooked. It allows your engine to run smoothly by making sure it doesn’t overheat. Fortunately, these devices last a long time so you won’t have to worry about having it changed often.

Most experts recommend that you should change your water pump when the timing belt is serviced. Water pumps are driven by the timing belt and usually last around 100,000-150,000 kilometres. Most manufacturers do a good job of making quality pumps, so it is fairly unlikely that you’ll run into trouble with one.

However, problems with your water pump can still happen. If there is coolant leaking around the water pump than it is most likely failing. Another sign is if the pump is making a louder noise than usual.

Water pump problems are difficult to diagnose yourself, so it’s a good idea to get it checked every once in a while by your mechanic.
