How to Change a Fuel Filter | Car Maintenance Tips

Changing your cars fuel filter

While it’s possible that your fuel filter can last you the life of your car, experts suggest that you have your filter changed every 20,000 kilometers. Changing your fuel filter yourself can be an easy job, but if you’re not comfortable doing it yourself you should just take it to the mechanics.

Changing your filter only requires simple tools such as screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers and sockets. You should also wear goggles and gloves to ensure gasoline doesn’t get into your eyes or onto your skin.

Once you’ve located the filter you’ll need to relieve the pressure in the fuel line by removing the fuse for the fuel pump. You should also disconnect the negative terminal of your battery. Next, you’ll need to disconnect the fuel lines and dispose of your oil filter.

After you oil filter is removed it’s time to put in the new one. Your new filter will have an arrow indicating the direction the fuel should flow in. Once your new filter is attached you’ll need to reattach the fuel lines.

Finally, you should clean up any fuel that may have spilled and check for any leaks with the car running.
