Upper Canada Mall Redevelopment – What to Look Forward to
Earlier this year, it was announced that Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket would undergo some pretty extensive renovations. Well, if you’ve passed by the popular shopping destination anytime recently, you’ve probably noticed that construction for this project is fully underway – and you may be wondering what exactly is going to change. Here is the 411 on everything you can look forward to at Upper Canada Mall once the $60 million transformation is complete in 2018:
New Stores:
Some new retailers have already begun to pop up around the mall, with more scheduled to open over the next year or so. Just a few weeks ago, a Sunrise Records location opened in the space vacated by HMV on the second floor of the shopping centre. At a time when many music stores are closing as more and more people are getting their tunes digitally, this will likely turn into a can’t-miss destination for old school music lovers who prefer to purchase hard copies of their favourite albums.
Those with a sweet tooth are sure to be excited for the pending arrival of Squish Candies, the Montreal-based boutique chain that specializes in gourmet gummies. Along with the 100-plus flavours of gummies they offer, you will also be able to purchase chocolate, licorice and marshmallows at this new shop.
Perhaps the most noteworthy new opening will be the completely redesigned, one-level, 64,000 square foot Sport Chek store that will replace the existing two-floor location. The new store, which will be among the last to open as part of the plan that has been set out, will use state-of-the-art technology to provide the best possible customer experience for athletes and sports fans.
New Food:
It looks like Upper Canada will soon become a destination for foodies living north of the city. Arthurs Landing Bar Grill Hub, part of The Landing Group restaurant chain, has already opened in time for the summer months. From weekend brunch to late night drinks while watching the game, this new restaurant looks like it will appear to a wide range of eaters. But this is just the start to the food additions Upper Canada will be making.
The cornerstone piece of the redevelopment project is yet-to-be-officially-named Food Market, a first-to-market grocery market featuring more than 25 food vendors – think a more modern, easier-to-get-to Kensington Market. According to the Oxford Properties press release, shoppers can look forward to, “an assortment of fresh foods and prepared take-away options, including; produce, a butcher shop, fish monger, cheese shop, bakery, a juice bar, and a gourmet gift shop.” This market looks like it could really be a game-changer for the grocery shopping experience in Newmarket.
The Market is also expected to include a number of full-service restaurants, although it is not clear yet which ones.
Mall-goers can also look forward to a having a brand new, two-level court space to relax during a busy day of shopping.
