What is an Oil Life Indicator | Car Maintenance Tips
Almost every driver knows to extend the life of their engine they should have routine oil changes. Experts say you should have your oil changed every three months or 5000 kilometers, but this is just an approximation. Sometimes when you have your oil changed, the old oil will be perfectly fine and you’ll have no idea.
Fortunately, there is a way of tracking when your vehicle is in need of an oil change. An oil life indicator tells you when you need a change based on the number of kilometers and other factors.
There are two types of indicators; algorithm-based and direct measurement. Algorithm-based indicators determine when you need a change based on a formula while direct measurement indicators measure the condition of the oil.
If your oil doesn’t have an oil life indicator it is strongly recommended that you get one. Not only will it help the planet by using less oil, but it will also save you money as you can probably have two fewer changes each year.
