What to do if the Check Engine Light comes on | Car Tips
While the check engine light going on can be as trivial as a loose gas cap, it can also indicate serious problems to your engine. Although you don’t have to immediately pull over when it goes on, it’s a very smart idea to get your vehicle checked out as soon as possible. Here are some things you should consider doing before you make your way to the mechanic’s.
The first thing you should try to do is tighten your gas cap as this is often the reason why the light turns on in the first place. However, if the light remains on you probably have a bigger problem on your hands.
Fortunately, the problem can actually be diagnosed yourself if you own a scan tool. However, it’s really only recommended that you use this tool if you have a good background in automotive.
If you have anything attached to the back of your vehicle such as a trailer, you should stop towing it. It is also a smart idea to reduce your speed until you have your vehicle checked out.
Finally, if you’re still unsure of what to do, you could contact OnStar if you have a subscription. The advisor can read the trouble code and suggest what is best for you and your vehicle.
